The west of Scotland has some of the most intriguing and picturesque villages and towns in Scotland, and many are little known from the stark black and white buildings of Inveraray reflected in the still water of Loch Fyne to the mulicoloured buildings of Tobermory or Tarbert.
Campbeltown
At the very tip of Kintyre, in the most south westerley part of Argyll, the 'wee toon' made famous by the whisky output of the 1800's and the song by Paul McCartney - Mull of Kintyre is home to a small fishing fleet, berthing for boats and a small selection of shops that is getting smaller as the years go by.
Troubled by lack of access and dwindling population, particularly when the US forces left Machrihanish some years ago, it is hoped that with new investment that the town will be revitalised.
Carradale
Carradale is a very small community, centred around a popular hotel and bar but also around a very small fishing community. It has a superb beach and is a quiet and tranquil place to live.
Inveraray
Probably the most well known location on the west coast, Inveraray proves to be a popular place to visit with thousands of tourists and day trippers finding their way here year after year.
Things of particular interest include Inveraray Jail, Inveraray Castle and the Woollen Mill to name a view, not to mention on a still day the stunning reflections in the loch of this beautiful landscape and black and white village.
Lochgilphead
The dividing town, sending traffic either northwards to Oban or southwards to Tarbert is a welcome stop off point, with shops, cafe's and plenty of parking.
With a great view south down Loch Fyne, and access to the Crinan Canal for a good long walk, Lochgilphead is one village you will definitely pass through on your westward journey.
Muasdale
A tiny village, with a single shop midway along the west coast of Kintyre. Perfect for self catering holiday makers and campers, you should stay here at the holiday park which has a great beach and stunning views across to Gigha.
Oban
Probably the busiest and well known town in Argyll, Oban is a bustling west coast town that connects the mainland to islands like Mull by ferry.
Tarbert
Tarbert, a small fishing village on Loch Fyne connects Cowal and Islay by ferry. It is a quaint, mostly quiet but enterprising village with a selection of shops and great people.
